Things Fall Apart Lens BLOG

After much consideration it would seem that writing an essay about Things Fall Apart while using the post colonialism perspective is indeed the more reasonable route to take.  Post colonialism, with all of the ideas and freedom surrounding it, could not be a more intriguing tool to use for the coming essay.
I will use this theoretical text in the most basic way as to which it is described.  This means that understanding and analyzing the novel is very crucial, however I will need to be very careful.  If I am to successfully develop a topic using a post-colonial view then interpreting the discourse and not bonding with an idea that seems like an end all be all answer will be extremely important.  There will be many thoughts and ideas to be gathered from the book and avoiding thinking like “New Critics” will be a notable feat.
In order to lay the workings of my analysis, the key words “hegemony” and “objective reality” spring up from the theoretical text.  Hegemony will be important to this book because it deals with the perceived morals a culture abides by, whereas objective reality is something I will have to remember due to the fact that it ultimately states a view where reality is made of a “social construct”.  “From this point of view, no single or primary objective reality exists; instead, many realities exist.” ( 234 ).
When I start to write my essay hopefully I will have a lot clearer of an idea about what exactly it will be discussing, but I can say that I would, if given the chance, like to focus upon an aspect of freedom coming from the main character Okonkwo.  Using post colonialism the way I understand it to be, I feel it would make for a very interesting essay to dig deeper into the freedom, and yet ironical slavery that Okonkwo seems to hold within himself.
